Ear Surgery
Ear surgery (known medically as otoplasty) can correct protruding ears that may be a source of embarrassment or, in the case of children especially, emotional pain. At Huntington Plastic Surgery Institute, our team of board-certified plastic surgeons is dedicated to providing our patients with less prominent ears that can help them avoid negative attention and, for younger patients, teasing, and bullying.
What Does Ear Surgery Do?
Ear surgery corrects the appearance of unusually large or protruding ears by changing their shape, size, or angle through a variety of treatment options, including ear augmentation, ear pinning (pulling ears closer to the head), and ear reduction. It can be performed on both children and adults. In some cases, some protrusion may return either due to the continued growth of ears and also due to stretching but the overall results should remain a major improvement.
Patient Information
Studies have shown that ear surgery significantly improves patients’ mental wellbeing. Many individuals who receive the treatment experience a positive change in their self-esteem and confidence. Children may also experience reduced anxiety.
While children can receive this treatment, the surgery should be done after their ears have grown to their full size, which is typically after the age of 5. Additionally, children should be able to follow directions from medical staff and clearly communicate their consent to the procedure.
