Liposuction

Liposuction, sometimes called “lipo,” removes excess fat from targeted areas of the body to provide a slimmer and more toned appearance. This safe and time-tested procedure can benefit individuals who are unable to rid themselves of stubborn body fat, often in the abdominal and waist areas, through diet and exercise alone.

At Huntington Plastic Surgery Institute, our board-certified plastic surgeons and skilled medical staff can help you achieve your appearance goals when nature won’t.

How Does Liposuction Work?

As the name implies, liposuction removes fat through the use of a special surgical vacuum attached to a cannula, though the process is more precise and complex than it may sound. Liposuction eliminates fat from areas that are largely unresponsive to diet and exercise, resulting in a slimmer and tightened appearance. Results typically last indefinitely, as long as patients maintain an effective diet and exercise regime. If the patient gains weight, fat will return but it may mostly go to other areas of the body. Liposuction has been practiced for decades and remains a safe and highly effective procedure.

The most common areas of treatment include the following:

  • Abdomen
  • Upper arms
  • Back and “love handles”
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Inner and outer thighs

For men suffering from gynecomastia, a condition that causes oversized breasts, liposuction can also be used for male breast reduction procedures.

Patient Information

Is liposuction a weight loss treatment?
No. Those obtaining liposuction should already be at or near their target weight. The treatment removes a few pounds of fat at most.
What about loose skin?
If the skin is in the stomach region, abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, may be a more beneficial procedure. In many cases, abdominoplasty may also include some liposuction. For other areas of the body, lift procedures such as arm lifts (brachioplasty) may be better advised. If you’re not sure about the precise nature of flabby areas on your body but are serious about treating them, please schedule a consultation and our plastic surgeon will find the best strategy in your case.
Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Candidates for liposuction should be in good health and at, or close to, their ideal weight.  A youthful skin tone and elasticity are also helpful for achieving the best results. This ensures that the skin can adjust to the body’s new contours without resulting in sagging. Those with diminished skin elasticity may benefit more from surgeries such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or various lift procedures such as arm lifts. Alternatively, a combination of liposuction and a skin tightening procedure may be in order.

As with all plastic surgeries, it is important to have realistic expectations. Your plastic surgeon will discuss your most likely outcomes as well as all of the relevant risks and benefits before your procedure.
